Just finished up Carnival- made $249 on ticket sales, and $200 on CD/DVD sales, spent about $100 on decorations, $50 on food, $50 for the Photographer. (total ticket sales were $530- $198 went to the Mezz and $99 went to Salisbury Jaycees) 17 presale, 24 door sales.

Next year I would like to sell alcohol. I want to spend about $200-$250 on a venue, $50 on photographer, $50 on lighting/sound, and $100 on food and drinks. I lucked out with that this year! I could charge $15 presale and $20 at the door. It would be nice to have more of a party atmosphere with more background info on Mardi gras, games and activities, a little less dancing (like 4 sets in each of 2 acts- 8 total). Having hour devours worked well.

In an attempt to keep up with my blogging and also introduce moon casting I am writing today. February's Storm Moon/Quickening Moon/ Chaste Moon is a time for planning and self reflection. It is now the waxing phase, 2 days past the new moon marking the year of the metal tiger. It is also Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.

Goal setting- in my previous blog I forecasted a bit of the year.
1st quarter (January-march)- take the GMAT, apply to Grad school, complete Carnival and library classes
2nd Quarter (April-May)- substitute teach, pay off credit cards and bills, set up vending for spring/summer, get yoga certification
3rd Quarter (June-August)- vending!!!, teach yoga and dance classes, Pennsic, Pirates, other festivals
4th Quarter (September-December)- Start grad school, get a graduate assistant ship, library classes, get preggers for Auska in June 2011

The beginning of the year I decided it would be a good idea to go back to school. Last summer I quit my job at the Ward Museum in order to vend and travel to festivals. I didn't have a formal job for 3 months and survived off vending income alone. I made a business plan and got an LLC. I needed to order more inventory. Once I realized I could not get a business loan I knew I would have to go back to work. (Don't get me wrong, I don't regret leaving the Ward, it was time and I would have done it anyway). I started substitute teaching which was great because I worked shorter days and got paid more! Only problem is the kids wear me out and I cant check email or do any online stuff at work, but I did get good deals on printing, posters, and laminating!

Once the new year came around I realized I couldn't keep this up- I needed to go back to school for business in order to get the skills needed to start my own. I also want to start having kids soon and if Im going to be home taking care of babies, I might as well be studying! I can see myself working for an arts organization and a masters in business would definitely help me get there. I don't know if I will ever go back to biology. I will always care about the environment but I find a lot of hippocracy in the field and I am more compelled towards the art movement as a way of expressing my connection to the natural world.

So this first portion of the year involves planning for Carnival- which I hope to make about $1000 if this weather will allow it. I have been studying for the GMAT exam and completing my Graduate Admissions packet. Once I am accepted I plan to start school in teh fall along with a graduate assistantship in order to pay for it. So between march and August I have no plans other than to keep subbing through May then vend, vend, vend June-August. I might have to pick up another part time summer job. I would love to be able to improve my yoga practice, maybe they will give me hours at the gym. My gym class is not looking good. Although I have enough people interested in taking classes, the gym wants to move my schedule in order to accommodate other classes. I really like that place so I hope I don't get canceled. Once the library classes end in March, my World class is the only thing going on!

They do want me back in the fall at the library but are lowering the rate again. I'm thinking of offering some weekend workshops instead. Otherwise, I will have to work around my school/work schedule.

I have several people interested in troupe. Cali and Jade are the newest members. Liza, Kayla, Katherine, and Ericka are also interested.

Asalha Puja Day – Theravada Buddhist

Asalha Puja Day (pronounced "as-an-ha poo-jah) is also known as Dharma Day. It is one of the most important festivals of the Theravada Buddhists.

Asalha Puja Day marks the beginning of the Buddha’s teaching. It commemorates the Buddha’s first sermon in the Deer Park in Benares and the founding of the Buddhist Sangha.

The discourse (known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, or as “The First Turning of the Wheel of the Dharma”) consisted of the essence of all of the future teachings and was delivered to his first five disciples. In this message the Buddha taught the Middle Way, the Noble Eight-Fold Path and the Four Noble Truths: life means suffering (dukka); origin of suffering is attachment (tanha); cessation of suffering is attainable and finally, the way to cessation is via the eightfold path.

Dharma Day also marks the beginning of the worship of the Triple Gems, namely: the Lord Buddha, His Teachings and His Disciples.

Asalha Puja Day is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the waxing moon of the eighth lunar month (July) – in 2009 it is on Tuesday, July 7th.

Theravada Buddhists observe Asalha Puja Day by spending extra time reading the teachings of the Buddha and expressing gratitude that the Buddha, and other enlightened teachers, have shared their knowledge. Dharma Day is also considered a perfect time to come together at the sangha for celebration through readings and teachings from elder students, lamas, rinopches, etc. Cleaning of homes, temples and monasteries also take place on this day. Generally speaking, the activities done on this day are similar to those done on Vesak. (For a refresher, you might want to look back at the Interfaith eLert on Vesak. You can find it in the eLert Archives at: Vesak.)

Those unable to attend sangha on this day are encouraged to spend extra time in meditation, reflection, and in the reading of Buddha’s teachings.

Buddhists are invited to make merit throughout the day.

Theravada (pronounced – more or less – "terra-VAH-dah"), literally, "the Teaching of the Elders" or "the Ancient Teaching", is the oldest surviving Buddhist school. It is relatively conservative, and is generally closest to early Buddhism.

For many centuries, Theravada has been the predominant religion of continental Southeast Asia (Thailand, Myanmar/Burma, Cambodia, and Laos) and Sri Lanka. Today Theravada Buddhists number well over 100 million worldwide. In recent decades Theravada has begun to take root in the West.

On July 7th, we ask that each of you pause for a few moments and, in a manner appropriate in your faith tradition and/or belief system, send thoughts of love and good will to all of our Theravada Buddhist brothers and sisters.

Bring an instrument and learn how to form Middle Eastern rhythms with local drummer John Matthews. Student Troupe- meets this Wednesday July 2, 6-7pm at the Art Institute. Anyone who has completed (or is very close to completing) a 6-8 week class or 4 hour workshop is welcome to join the troupe. Meetings are every other Wednesday in Salisbury at the Art Institute on Main Street. Great way for students to network, practice new skills, learn more moves, practice cues, lead, and formations, use zills, and more.

*NEW* Performance Troupe Now meets Every Wednesday! Join student troupe every other Wednesday to help teach and lead in group improvisation and loose choreography. Just getting acclimated and back into my time zone, I headed to Philadelphia with our Urban Berber, Cheryl, to assist me in another weekend of workshops. Cheryl and I laughed a lot together while we danced—what a delight. Having danced in Philly before she moved to Portland, Cheryl was able to reconnect with some of her old friends, while I made some great new ones! Vikki Williams sponsored us and has done an excellent job spreading the tribal word around that area of the country. The workshops were sold out, the show, casual but professional. The performances were varied and exciting. Before the weekend workshops, we had a great three days of wonderfully intensive Collective Soul Level One, with ten now-certified dancers. Rima, my host, was stupendous and we cooked and laughed when we weren’t dancing. Exhausting and exhilarating. With another promise to return.

Just when you thought practicing yoga couldn’t get more any more blissful, hipAHA — a fitness and health concierge service based in Fenwick Island — took it up a notch during the month of May and plans to continue programs through the summer.

Each Friday — weather permitting — hipAHA owner Lori Martin said her service hosts a yoga class on the Atlantic Street Beach in Fenwick Island, followed by a trip to the other end of the street for a glass of wine or cocktail at Nantuckets restaurant.

Salisbury University's Cultural Affairs Department introduces a night of Middle Eastern arts and entertainment 6-9pm, Monday, April 28 in the Guerrieri Center. A free cabaret-style bellydance workshop is at 6pm with Valerie/Nefertitti, Artistis Director of Damali Dance Company. The show is an encore performance of Shaharazad, a tale of 1001 nights. The classic story which includes famed characters such as Alladin, Sinbad, Ali Babba, and the genie. The dance performance features members of Damali Dance company including featured solos by Nefertiti and Viviana, a turkish performer famed for appearances at Marakesh restaurant in Washington, DC. Susan Beverly MLA has been teaching mediation since 1971 and The Artist’s Way for over a dozen years. She has her Master’s degree in Creativity Consulting and has been a Reiki Master teacher since 2001. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She trained in Hawaiian Lomi Lomi with Kahuna Harry Uhune Jim on the Big Island in 2003.

Ms. Beverly is also a successful singer/songwriter, writer, poet, and visual artist.

Sweetspot includes a large lending library of books, CDs, and DVDs; a baby grand piano, guitars, art supplies, and gallery. There are two guest bedrooms, a cozy woodstove, and every amenity. It’s close to the library, cafes, shops, lakes, parks, the bays and ocean, with woodsy trails for exploration, bike paths, and nearby indoor pool.

Tarot and gypsys

Topic: The time and place of the origin of the tarot

Inaccurate: The tarot comes from Egypt; India; China; Fez, Morocco; the Sufis; the Cathars; Jewish Kabbalists or Moses; or the origin of the tarot is unknown.

Current Historical Understanding: The tarot originated in northern Italy early in the 15th century (1420-1440). There is no evidence for it originating in any other time or place. The earliest extant cards are lavish hand-painted decks from the courts of the nobility.

Topic: The origin of the word "tarot"

Inaccurate: The word is Egyptian, Hebrew, or Latin; it is an anagram; it holds the key to the mystery of the cards.

Current Historical Understanding: The earliest names for the tarot are all Italian. Originally the cards were called carte da trionfi (cards of the triumphs). Around 1530 (about 100 years after the origin of the cards), the word tarocchi (singular tarocco) begins to be used to distinguish them from a new game of triumphs or trumps then being played with ordinary playing cards. The etymology of this new word is not known. The German form is tarock, the French form is tarot. Even if the etymology were known, it would probably not tell us much about the idea behind the cards, since it only came into use 100 years after they first appeared.

Inaccurate: The symbolism of the trumps comes from Egypt (or India, or other exotic locale).

Current Historical Understanding: The symbolism of the trumps is drawn from the culture of Medieval and Renaissance Europe. Most tarot subjects are distinctive to European Christendom. Illustrations virtually identical to each of the tarot subjects can be found in European art, and such precise analogs are not found in other cultures.

Inaccurate: The gypsies brought the tarot to Europe and spread its use.

Current Historical Understanding: This idea was popularized in the 19th century by several writers, notably Vaillant and Papus, without any basis in historical fact. There is no evidence that the Rom (gypsies) used tarot cards until the 20th century. Most of their fortune-telling was through palmistry and later through the use of ordinary playing cards.

ATS Freebie

Great time Thursday night. 13 wonderful women graced me with their presence, including some very dear friends and supporters. I wore my complete costume (exactly what I wore the previous Saturday at Steer Inn). I wanted to give the newbies a better idea of what tribal is and how different it is from traditional bellydance. We went over some basic concepts and moves used in ATS.

This is a great class for super beginners because it is free and you leave with the ability to (or knowledge of how to) do a simple example of bellydance using ATS moves. This class is also great for experienced dancers who have yet to experiment with ATS in a group setting. Although we do not get through enough moves to create an ATS dance repertoire, its is an essential stepping stone into bellydance the tribal way.

As more dancers are evolving into fusion, it is necessary to understand where tribal comes from, its American roots, and the key vocabulary, formations, and ques before journeying into the experimental dance scene. My goal is to continue to hold true to the ATS format, training as many people I can, recruiting dancers into a troupe, performing for the arts and culture, and aiding fusion-ers with the basics.

ATS is beautiful because once you know it, you can dance with anyone else that knows it, even if you have never danced with them before!

ATS Workshop

This Saturday was the very first ATS workshop I have taught at AI&G and the first ever held on the Eastern Shore. I was hoping to teach experienced dancers that could easily utilize the moves and skills in any inprov setting... and that is exactly what I did. Dancers Carol (a.k.a Zatara) and the beautiful Karen of Lewes, DE attended. One of my vetran students, Renae, also came for the second half of the workshop.

I feel I have compiled a dance workshop format that will teach an experienced dancer how to improvise using the ATS moves with any ATS dancer across the nation in just 4 hours! I also compiled a series of exercises, stretches, and warm-up moves to help fine-tune your dance. I feel that deep breathing, appreciation, and meditation are also part of the dance.

We all did a great job interacting with each other. When it was over I felt like we should have done more improv, combining the slow moves we learned in the first half with the fast movements of the second half. Overall, I think it was definitely worth the time and effort ladies!!

A peak into my Merchants Trunk and you will find handmade and Indian choli tops, handmade and Egyptian hip scarves, satin harem pants, handmade and imported jewelry, Middle Eastern embroidered vests and tops, a bargain bin, bindis, henna supplies, hair flowers, makeup, and my famous crocheted tassel belts in all different colors! I intend the majority of my wares to be purchased by dancers with intentions to dance in troupe or in class.
